It’s World Radio Day and the 2026 theme “Radio and Artificial Intelligence stresses that “AI IS A TOOL, NOT A VOICE!” This theme focuses on using AI for innovation, efficiency, and deepening listener connections while emphasizing that human judgment and ethics remain the core of trusted radio broadcasting.

World Radio Day was proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO Member States and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.  World Radio Day (WRD) is celebrated every February 13 as a Day to thank broadcasters for the news they deliver, the voices they amplify and the stories they share.

Today Artificial Intelligence (AI) opens a new chapter: not just for innovation but for deepening their bond with listeners. When used ethically and responsibly to support professional judgement, creativity and public service values, AI can become an ally in strengthening audience trust.

Technology alone does not build trust. Radio broadcasters do!

Radio reaches the widest audience in the world including remote communities and vulnerable people — the illiterate, the disabled, women, youth and the poor. Keeping up with the 21st century – radio has proven that it can stand the test of time – by adapting and adding the newest forms of technology — broadband, mobile, tablets and now, AI. As a key communicator, it is one of, if not, THE most powerful and effective way to provide important and emergency information and news — during times of war, weather disasters, public health epidemics, and more.

Radio has Socially Sparked® our lives around the world in so many ways. It is a powerful communication medium that unites, engages and affects positive change and remains steadfast as it continues to evolve with the technological times. Let’s all thank the radio broadcasters and folks behind the scenes that keep us informed, especially during our darkest hours. Personally, the jury on AI mixed with creatives, the media broadcasters, journalists and artists is still out.
