The nominations are out and 75 is look’n good as the 2022 American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards® return LIVE to New York City’s Radio City Music Hall after a two year hiatus. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of Broadway’s coveted annual Tony Awards Presentation and it will make history on several fronts.

75 look'n good as Tony Awards Return
The Tony Awards return LIVE for the 75th Annual Ceremony in 2022

History in the Making for the 75th Annual Tony Awards

  • The 75th annual ceremony will mark the first time in Tony Awards history that the show will be available LIVE nationwide. The Awards show will include an hour of exclusive programming streaming on Paramount+ June 12 from 7 PM ET, followed by the three-hour main awards ceremony airing live on CBS and streaming simultaneously on Paramount+. The broadcast will also be available to stream on demand on Paramount+ for all membership tiers following the live stream.
  • L Morgan Lee makes history as the first openly transgender person to be nominated in an acting category in the 75-year history of the Tony Awards. Lee was recognized in the category Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Thought 1 in A Strange Loop.
  • Diversity in the Nominations looms large this year and the nominations reflect that input. There were an unprecedented number of shows by Black Creators. In the play categories alone, nearly a dozen of the nominees are black or women and 2 of the 5 nominees for’ new play’ are written by women.
  • Leading Actor in a Play Category demands 7 contenders. The regulations for Tony Award acting nominations is that each category have no more than 5 contenders, unless a tie-in voting warrants a sixth name added to the ballot. Seven nominees on the same ballot for one category is highly unusual if ever done before.
