There were plenty of memorable moments from the 2019 Tony Awards that sparked Broadway’s biggest night. Moments ranged from long overdue first time award recipients as Elaine May to history-making winners as Ali Stroker. Here are the top sparks from some of the Tony winners speeches.
Top Award Winners' Sparks - Can We Quote You?
Actor Andre De Shields won the Tony Award for best performance by an actor for a featured role in a musical for Hadestown. In his acceptance speech he shared his secret of staying in the business for so long with his three rules of sustainability and longevity:
“1. Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming.
2. Slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be.
3. The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next, so keep climbing.”
Actress Ali Stroker made history last night as the first person in a wheelchair to ever win a Tony Award. She received the Tony for best featured actress in a musical for Oklahoma. Bravo
“This award is for every kid who is watching tonight who has a disability, who has a limitation, who has a challenge, who has been waiting to see themselves represented in this area. You are!”
Actor Bryan Cranston received the Tony Award for best lead actor in a play for his portrayal as newscaster Harold Beale in ‘Network.” The award-winning actor applauded the real media in his acceptance speech.
“I’d like to dedicate this to all the real journalists around the world, both, in the press, the print media and the broadcast media — who actually are in the line of fire with their pursuit of the truth. The media is not the enemy of the peope, demogoguery is the enemy of the people.”
Actress Stephanie J. Block won her Tony for best lead actress in a musical for her portrayal as Cher in The Cher Show. In addition to thanking the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League for the honor, she thanked god, and of course, the goddess Cher for her life and her legacy.
