It has been 61 years since civil rights activist Martin Luther king, Jr. had a dream and shared it in that momentous speech “I Have A Dream” on the March on Washington on August 26, 1963. As we celebrate MLK Day, we have to wonder if his dream is now a reality or still a work in progress?
Today the world celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 57 years after his violent assassination at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, TN. A legacy that has had a lasting impact on our society and culture. Dr. King’s influence carries on well after his death to this day — in everything from modern social justice movements to politics to pop culture in the years since then. From Elvis to President Obama, Nichelle Nichols to Black Lives Matter and Enough is Enough.

IPresident Ronald Reagan signed the bill to created MLK Day in 1983. The holiday is observed each year on the third Monday of January, and the commemoration is the only federal holiday that is “designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities,” according to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
