Oscar Nominee Selection Process Regresses since the 90th
Six Oscar® Nominee facts that Socially Sparked® and a few that had the adverse effect. The Academy Awards® reveals this year’s nominees with a few firsts and historical statistics. Yet, when it comes to the main categories, there is an obvious regression in all their 2018 progress towards leveling the playing field in Diversity and Equality. We highlight the nominees in the key categories below and spotlight a few Oscar nominee selection process facts that came up short.

BEST PICTURE/BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM: Parasite is the eleventh non-English language film nominated for Best Picture and the sixth to be nominated for both International Feature Film (formerly Foreign Language Film) and Best Picture in the same year. ACADEMY FALLS SHORT FOR 2020
The Academy seems to have regressed in terms of leveling the nominee playing field. The progress made with Oscars 90th addressing Diversity and Equality is absent this year. This statement by no means should be translated to take away any of the well-deserved accolades of the current slate of Oscar nominees. It’s just an observation.
Here’s an excerpt from SOCIALLY SPARKED NEWS feature on the Oscars 90th nominations —
“BEST ACTOR & BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR NOMINEES – The #METOO and #TIMESUP Movements clearly had an impact in these categories as Golden Globe winner James Franco (The Disaster Artist) was snubbed, making room for Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.) to receive the Best Actor nominee nod. And, Christopher Plummber (All the Money in the World) receives the nominee accolade in the Best Supporting Actor category, after last minute replacement for tarnished actor Kevin Spacey.”
Academy members from each of the 17 branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and International Feature Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.
Congratulations to all of this year’s Oscar Nominees. We hope that in years to come we can once again sign off with our signaure paragraph from The 90th anniversary of the Academy Awards feature — “It’s wonderful to see positive changes in the nominating process.” The 92nd Academy Awards Presentation will be televised live on February 9th, 8PM ET on ABC. We can’t wait!! — Abbe is Socially Sparked Tweet @sosparkednews & @asparks01
