April 2017 – I launched a fun side project called Tinsley Ellis Blues Is Dead, which focuses on the Blues and R&B songs performed by Grateful Dead and a few other Fillmore era bands. We debuted the show at the Skull and Roses Festival in Ventura, CA in April. Blues Is Dead ended up playing 25 shows coast to coast in 2017. It was fun busting out classics like Spoonful, Big Railroad Blues and Turn on Your Lovelight.

May 1st – I was proud to be a featured performer at Bruce Hampton’s 70th birthday concert at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre alongside musical giants Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Chuck Leavell and members of Phish, Widespread Panic and REM. This was both the best and the worst concert I’ve ever been a part of — as it ended with Bruce’s passing away, literally onstage in front of 5,000 fans and friends. Bruce was a dear old friend, and I miss him very much.

Fall 2017 – This Fall, I re-signed with Alligator Records, a label I’ve been with off and on since 1988. When it comes to Blues record labels, there’s Alligator and then there’s all the rest. My new album, Winning Hand comes out on January 12th, 2018 with a big concert that night at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse. From there, we launch a world tour. The first shows in January take us up the eastern part of the country. For Full Tour Dates go to the website, We hope to see all our friends and make new ones in 2018.

Socially Sparked News would like to thank Tinsley Ellis for taking time from his busy schedule to share his top Socially Sparked moments with us.
