THE FOLK MUSIC MISNOMER

When one hears the words “Folk Music” they tend to think of older-age hippies of yore with white hair chanting in song about a cause or social justice issue. And yes, that is semi- accurate, but it’s not even close to the whole story or definition.

The port city of New Orleans (NOLA) welcomed with open arms the world’s largest gathering of the folk music industry and community (crossing a diverse array of genres including Appalachian, Americana, Blues, Bluegrass, Celtic, Cajun, Global Roots, Indigenous, Old Time, Traditional, Singer-Songwriter, and Spoken Word).

Record attendance of musicians, presenters, agents, organizations, media and more representing over 40 countries plus the indigenous tribes of New Orleans and Louisiana relayed and displayed their versions of tradition. Young and old encompassing all generations came from far and away to share their genres of music and their cultural traditions and ideals.

Socially Sparked News

NOLA served up the perfect backdrop for this year’s Folk Alliance music conference which beautifully blended traditions of NOLA with traditions from the world. Throughout the next week Socially Sparked News will be sharing stories of these traditions as told in song, spoken word, panel sessions and more.
